A private museum in the old town devoted to Austrian and German artists whose work was suppressed under National Socialist rule โ the work officially branded at the time as degenerate art. The premise is direct: between 1933 and 1945 hundreds of artists were removed from exhibitions and academies, their work confiscated or destroyed, and many were forced into exile or banned from working. Those who survived lost their most important years, and many never regained standing after the war because artistic memory had moved on to what came next. The lost generation refers to precisely that. The collection is largely expressionist and modern, by names specialists know better than the general public โ which is the very problem the museum addresses rather than a flaw in it. Practical points: the location is central in the old town near the Alter Markt, entry is ticketed, and hours may include closure one or more days a week โ check before going. The visit takes about an hour.
