The Museum of Art History: the Habsburgs' art hoard, assembled over centuries from half of Europe, finally opened to the public in a building raised specifically for it in 1891. The building is itself a work — a colossal marble staircase, a dome, and friezes painted by a young Klimt before he was famous. The collection holds the largest group of Bruegel the Elder paintings anywhere — a full room of winter village scenes and Flemish proverbs — alongside Vermeer, Raphael, Caravaggio, Velázquez and Rubens. Downstairs sit Egyptian and Near Eastern collections and a cabinet of curiosities the emperors gathered for astonishment rather than value. A practical note: don't try to see everything. Take Bruegel and the Dutch painting, rest in the café under the dome — one of Europe's finest museum cafés — then finish with one more wing.

Look up on the stairs: small panels Klimt painted in his twenties, in a manner nothing like the gold that came later.
