This is a history museum — artefacts, tools and jewels. The Staatsgalerie is an art museum — paintings and sculpture. They are minutes apart and easy to combine in one day.
Reasonably. It is not large, so they do not tire of it quickly, and the jewels and weapons hold their attention. But the display is traditional, so do not expect much hands-on interaction.
No. The inner courtyard is free to walk through and photograph. A ticket is only needed for the museum galleries inside the building.

The Landesmuseum Württemberg is inside the Old Castle, a sixteenth-century fortress right in the centre of Stuttgart. The building is part of the visit: an inner courtyard with arcades on three levels, one of the finest spots in the city — and the courtyard is free to walk into. The museum covers the history of the region from the Stone Age to the present. Its best-known holdings are very old artefacts found in nearby caves, some among the oldest known artworks anywhere. It also shows the crown jewels, tools, clothing and clocks from various centuries. The museum is not huge, which is an advantage: you can see it in an hour and a half without tiring. Being in the middle of town makes it easy to add to any day, and it is a good choice when it rains.
