This is a Renaissance castle grown from an old stronghold, with an open courtyard and a museum you can visit. The New Palace opposite is an eighteenth-century baroque building whose interior is government offices, closed to visitors.

The Old Castle is a Renaissance fortress in the middle of Stuttgart, grown out of a tenth-century stronghold that was gradually turned into a palace. It is the oldest large building left in the city. Its best feature is the inner courtyard: a square surrounded by columned arcades on three levels. The courtyard is open to everyone and free, one of the loveliest spaces in Stuttgart, and it is used for concerts and seasonal markets. Inside the building is the Landesmuseum Württemberg, with its own separate ticket, showing the region's archaeology, craft and crown jewels. The castle was damaged in the war and by a fire in 1931, and restored afterwards. Today it faces the New Palace across the square, and the difference between the two buildings explains two centuries of changing taste.
