The city with eyes: Sibiu's Large Square is ringed by pastel Saxon houses that watch you from "eyes" — the famous narrow roof windows staring from every corner. Since the fifteenth century the square has been the city's stage: markets, executions and festivals, today cafés and the events of the international theatre festival each June. Around it stands everything: the Brukenthal palace, the Jesuit church, Haller House, and the Council Tower (1588), climbed on a token ticket to the finest view over the roofs and the Small Square behind — and beneath the tower a passage leads to the Small Square, the Bridge of Lies and the Lower Town with its stairways. Sibiu's old town is flat and closed to cars, and the square is the natural start and return of every walk.
