Praça Ramos de Azevedo is a square in the República district of central São Paulo, famous as the home of the Theatro Municipal, with which it forms one of the city's best-known images. It was created in 1911, after the theatre opened, as the «Esplanada do Theatro», and renamed in 1928 after the death of Ramos de Azevedo, the architect who built the theatre. Before the theatre went up, the area was known as «Tea Hill», as it was part of the estate of the Baron of Itapetininga, who grew black tea there, and it held a sawmill owned by the German immigrant Gustav Sydow. It was expropriated in 1903, and the square and theatre opened in 1911 as part of the remodelling of the Anhangabaú Valley. The square lies between Rua Conselheiro Crispiniano and Rua Formosa, below the Viaduto do Chá and beside the Alexandre Mackenzie Building, with a fountain monument to the composer Carlos Gomes, bronze sculptures and steps descending towards the valley. It gives the finest view of the Theatro Municipal's façade, best in the evening when it is lit.
