Lilla Torg, the little square, is Malmo's prettiest and most photographed: a cobbled space bounded by half-timbered houses of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in earth colours, their facades leaning slightly with age. It was created in 1592 when the adjacent Stortorget proved too small for the city's growing market. For centuries it was the vegetable and craftsmen's market, then in recent decades it became the heart of Malmo's social life: nearly every building around it is a restaurant, cafe or bar, and in summer the square fills with outdoor seating under awnings until the cobbles are barely visible. Winter inverts it entirely, with outdoor heaters and blankets on the chairs. Its most important building is Hedmanska Garden — a sixteenth-century merchant's courtyard preserved with its timber buildings around an inner yard, entered free from a corner of the square and holding craft workshops and small shops. The square is steps from Stortorget, so the two are always visited together.

The smarter use is one drink on the square for the atmosphere, then dinner on a street like nearby Lilla Nygatan or around Stortorget, where the value is considerably better.
