The castle above the city: all of Ljubljana is seen from the tower of its castle on the green hill in the old town's heart — fifteenth-century walls cleverly refitted for today, a courtyard of cafés and concerts, and a lookout tower opening the red roofs, the river and the mountains to Alpine peaks on clear days. Inside is the museum of Slovenian history passing through the centuries, the puppetry exhibition (Slovenia is a capital of puppet theatre), the painted chapel of St George, the cells from the Austrian prison era and a panoramic film about the city — plus a time-travel "escape" tour with actors for families. Two restaurants sit in the castle, one Michelin-starred. Ascend by funicular from the market square in a minute, or on foot in fifteen minutes up forest paths from three sides — walking down after sunset through the trees and the lit walls is the finest end to a Ljubljana day.
