A green dome and twin towers above the market: Ljubljana Cathedral (1706) is Italian Baroque in the old town's heart, marked outside by its green dome and its famous bronze door — added in 1996 for Pope John Paul II's visit, it tells 1,200 years of Slovenian Christianity in relief ending with the Pope's own face; the side door bears the faces of Ljubljana's bishops. Inside is bright Baroque with astonishing ceiling frescoes by Giulio Quaglio depicting the torment of St Nicholas, a marble altar and an organ — and a gentle silence steps from the market's bustle. Twenty minutes suffice, and both doors deserve a careful reading before entering.
