The Macao Museum of Art is a big five-storey building in the Sé district, founded on 19 March 1999. It is the city's largest art space, covering 10,192 square metres, of which 4,000 are for display, with traditional Chinese art and major shows, making it a good choice for a break from crowded streets. Spaces are set aside for different kinds of show: traditional Chinese art on the fourth floor, the museum's collections on the third and a large special gallery on the second. It has staged varied exhibitions, including calligraphy and painting by the artist Fu Shen. Displays change often, so what you see differs from one visit to the next. You enter a spacious hall with escalators, in a building of stone and glass under a curved metal roof, and the outdoor plaza shows iron canopies and the city's towers. Inside are tall white rooms with timber floors, large canvases and hanging works, long benches and calm light. It is about 710 m in a straight line from the Grand Prix Museum. Sources give hours of 10:00 to 19:00, with closure on Monday, so check ahead. Ask about picture rules in each show, do not touch the works and stay behind the ropes. It suits hot or rainy days, so allow an hour or more.
