The Mercado dos Pinhões, or Pinhões Cultural Market, is a cast-iron building in Fortaleza that was once a public market and now hosts concerts, courses, a food fair and other cultural events. It was made in France in 1896 by the Guillot Pelletier workshops, shipped to Fortaleza and opened on 18 April 1897; the city has protected it as a historic landmark since 2008. It was originally part of a larger iron complex known as the «Iron Market» on Praça Carolina in the centre, built during late-19th-century urban reforms that pursued modernity and public health on the model of Les Halles in Paris. In 1938 the complex was dismantled: this part moved to Aldeota, while the other went to Aerolândia in 1968. Today it stands on Praça Visconde de Pelotas and comes alive on music nights.
