The Ponte dos Ingleses is a long pier reaching out to sea from Praia de Iracema, begun by an English company on 24 September 1921 as a new port for Fortaleza; work stopped for lack of money, so it never served as a port, and for years it lay neglected, worn by the waves, until people came to treat it as a lookout. In 1994 it was restored and fitted out for visitors, with a timber structure added over part of it by the same architects who designed the Dragão do Mar Centre. Today it holds a dolphin protection centre and a tower for watching whales and dolphins. It is Fortaleza's favourite spot for watching the sun set over the sea, filling with locals and visitors late in the day, and dolphins are sometimes seen nearby. Beside it stands the old iron pier that was the city's first port.
