Ceará's Museum of Image and Sound is a Fortaleza museum devoted to recording the state's audiovisual culture. Its work began in 1980 in the basement of the state public library; its holdings grew with equipment, documents, photos, tapes and cordel booklets from a closed cultural centre and a film collection from the educational TV channel, and it reopened in its present home on 7 August 1996. The house was designed by the architect José Barros Maia, «Mainha», as a private residence and opened in November 1951; from 1963 it was the official seat of the state government until 1971, then housed the Anthropological Museum until 1990. A garden and two porcelain lions brought from Porto in the early 20th century guard it and have become its trademark. The museum catalogues material on Fortaleza, the arts, crafts, festivals, music, literature, landscapes and the figures of Ceará. Check hours and exhibitions.
