Praia de Iracema is a beach and neighbourhood in Fortaleza named after Iracema, heroine of the famous novel by the Ceará writer José de Alencar. It was once called Porto das Jangadas and then Praia do Peixe, and until 1947 it was Fortaleza's port, where goods and people landed by the Ponte Metálica (Metal Bridge), retired after the Mucuripe port was built. Today it is the city's bohemian quarter, declared an area of cultural interest in 2003 and home to the Dragão do Mar cultural centre; in April 2023 the city began redeveloping some 200,000 m² of its waterfront.
