The star's costumes.
The Carmen Miranda Museum is devoted to the life and career of the singer and actress Carmen Miranda, the star who carried Brazilian fashion and music to Hollywood in the 1940s and became famous for her fruit-laden turbans. It stands in the well-known Flamengo Park on the shore of Guanabara Bay. The museum was decreed in 1956 but only opened on 5 August 1976. It occupies a circular building twenty-two metres across designed by the architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy, originally built as a pavilion for a children's playground in the park's plan, with a folded exposed-concrete façade and an inner courtyard that brings in light and air. It holds the largest collection of Carmen Miranda's original belongings, with costumes, turbans, accessories and personal items, more than three thousand pieces in all, including about 1,500 photographs. It closed in 2013 and reopened to the public on 4 August 2023 after renovation. Check opening times before going.
