The Cuiabá River Museum, officially the Hid Alfredo Skaf River Museum, occupies the old Fish Market in the Porto district on the bank of the Cuiabá River. The building dates from 1899 and was listed by the state government in 1983 as part of Cuiabá's historic heritage. The Fish Market, also called the Port Market, was an open-air market that filled the riverside streets every Sunday, used by riverside dwellers and fishermen. From 1996 the city restored it to revive the memory of the Porto district and the riverside towns, moving the market to a large shed nearby. The museum is named after an old resident of the district, of Arab descent, who was one of the leading traders of the Fish Market. The building is Neoclassical and a landmark of the area, with space for visits and cultural activities where souvenirs, food and objects from Cuiabá's traditions are displayed. A visit is short and pairs well with a walk along the riverbank and the new fish market.
