SESC Arsenal is a cultural centre in Cuiabá's old military arsenal. King João VI ordered its creation in 1818; building began in 1819 and was finished in 1832, and it was enlarged in the 1840s amid border disputes with the newly independent Spanish-speaking states. It played an important role in the Paraguayan War (1864-1870), making and repairing weapons, and later became a prison and military headquarters. The Social Service of Commerce (SESC) took it over in 1989 and restored it by 2002 as a craft market and cultural centre. The building is in the French neoclassical style, with an ochre façade and white reliefs and a large inner courtyard now planted as a garden; it has been state-listed since 1984. Entry is free; it opens Tuesday to Saturday until 22:00 and Sunday until 21:00, closed Mondays. Every Tuesday from 17:00 there is a farmers' market with a free cultural programme, where alcohol is served.
