The Manoel do Espírito Santo «Rei da Água» Museum, known as the Old Water Tank Hill Museum, is a listed landmark in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso. It began as a 19th-century water tank holding 1.2 million litres, opened in November 1882 under the provincial president José Maria de Alencastro. The tank supplied Cuiabá's water when the city had just over 20,000 people and was shut down in 1940 as the city grew. For decades the site served other purposes, housing a radio transmitter and later rehearsals of a local samba school. It was listed as city heritage in 1991, revitalised in September 2007 and handed back to the city as a museum hosting exhibitions and events. The walls of its two underground galleries show old building techniques. Check opening times.
