Farroupilha Park, which everyone in Porto Alegre calls Redenção, is the city's most popular park, right next to the historic centre. The land was a marshy common on the edge of town, given to the public in 1807; in 1884 it was renamed the Fields of Redemption to celebrate the early abolition of slavery in the city, and in 1935, for the centenary of the Ragamuffin War (the Farroupilha revolution), its southern half was laid out as a park to designs by the French urbanist Alfred Agache. Inside are a lake with an island lookout reached by a bridge, pedal boats (some swan-shaped), an oriental corner with a dragon-shaped pond and arched bridges, a European corner with a French fountain, and the Monument to the Expeditionary, a granite double triumphal arch 12.5 metres high honouring the Brazilian soldiers who fought in Italy in the Second World War. Every Sunday from 9:00 the Brique da Redenção fills Avenida José Bonifácio with stalls of crafts, antiques and food, and the park fills with families sharing chimarrão. On Saturdays there are an organic market and a crafts fair.
