The Astronomical Observatory of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul is a scientific institution, museum and teaching unit on the university's central campus in downtown Porto Alegre. Founded in 1906 and opened in 1908, its first task was to keep the city's official time and provide weather forecasts, and from the start it was a leading centre of astronomy and meteorology, with instruments advanced for their day and a landmark in the state's history of science. Its building still keeps much of its original equipment and function, but since the main astronomical work moved to a modern observatory on Morro Santana, the original premises have become a science museum and public outreach centre, with its dome and historic telescope. The building is listed by the national heritage institute and is part of the central campus ensemble declared cultural heritage by the state. The observatory runs stargazing sessions and public visits at set times, so check its programme, and pair it with a walk around the campus and nearby Farroupilha Park.
