Näsijärvi lies eighteen metres above Pyhäjärvi, and the rapids between them — Tammerkoski — gave the power that made the city 'Finland's Manchester' in the nineteenth century.

The tallest observation tower in the Nordic countries: Näsinneula, "the Näsi needle", has risen 168 metres above the Särkänniemi park since 1971, its lift reaching in 27 seconds a viewing platform at 120 metres that opens Tampere between its two lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi, the old industrial city with its chimneys, and forest to the horizon. Above the platform turns a revolving restaurant completing a circuit in 45 minutes and holding a Michelin star — among Finland's finest restaurants outside the capital, needing advance booking; the platform itself has a small café. Sunset over the lake from the top is Tampere's first sight, and in winter the white ice stretches without end. Open year-round independently of the park; a half-hour visit, or two hours with the revolving dinner.
