The Araújo Vianna Auditorium is a concert venue inside Porto Alegre's Farroupilha Park, «Redenção», named after José de Araújo Vianna, the gaúcho composer active at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, whose best-known work is the opera «Carmela», in the Italian style he learned in Italy. The first auditorium was designed for the municipal band's concerts and opened on 19 November 1927: an open-air neoclassical acoustic shell with 400 seats on four terraces ringed by pergolas, on the site of today's Legislative Assembly. When the assembly needed a new seat it was demolished in 1958, and the architects Moacir Moojen Marques and Carlos Maximiliano Fayet designed a new venue four times larger in the park, which opened on 12 March 1964. It hosted concerts and opera, then from the 1970s shows by the great names of Brazilian popular music, and it remains one of the city's leading concert venues. Tickets by programme.
