Odeonsplatz is a wide square north of central Munich, where the old town meets the broad royal avenues running north and east. Its most prominent feature is the Feldherrnhalle: an open loggia of three arches in the Italian manner, built in the nineteenth century in honour of the Bavarian army's commanders. Its design was taken from a famous loggia in Florence. The place carries heavy political history: a failed Nazi coup attempt ended here in gunfire in 1923. During the Nazi years the site became a place of compulsory salute, and anyone wishing to avoid it slipped through a back alley nearby. A small plaque marks this today. The square is free and always open, and from it run the broad Ludwigstraße and the quiet Hofgarten.
