The Teatro Guaíra Cultural Centre, run by the Paraná state government, is one of the largest theatres in Latin America, its three auditoriums seating about 3,000 people in all, the biggest being the «Guairão». It stands on Praça Santos Andrade, opposite the historic building of the Federal University of Paraná, in the heart of Curitiba. Its story goes back to the 19th century: its predecessor, the São Theodoro theatre, opened on 28 September 1884 on the site of today's public library, and the theatre was later rebuilt on its present site in a modern building. The centre hosts four resident companies: the Paraná Symphony Orchestra, the Balé Teatro Guaíra, its dance school and the G2 contemporary dance company, and it runs a puppet theatre festival and the Gralha Azul theatre awards. The theatre isn't visited like a museum but experienced at a show: an orchestra concert, a ballet or a play, with tickets from the box office or online according to the programme. Pair it with a walk around the nearby historic centre.
