"Bovolo" is Venetian dialect for snail — and one look explains the name: an external spiral staircase of white arches coiling up the palace tower like a shell, hidden in a small lane minutes from St Mark's that only those seeking it find. The Contarini built it at the end of the 1400s as pure architectural showing-off, and for centuries it stayed a near-secret until the climb opened to visitors. The stair itself is the visit: you wind up with the arcades floor by floor to a small dome opening onto a rare rooftop view — Venice's tiles and towers from an intimate middle height, with St Mark's dome and campanile in the frame. A short, sweet visit that makes the perfect pause between the big San Marco sights — and finding the doorway is half the fun.
