The Panoptikum is Germany's oldest wax museum, run by the same family since 1879 — four generations and counting. It is the homegrown answer to the global wax chains: smaller, warmer, and distinctly Hamburg in its choice of figures. Across its floors stand more than 120 wax figures: world stars, statesmen and scientists, alongside German and Hamburg personalities a foreign visitor will not always recognise — which is part of the charm. The figures are made by hand in the museum's own workshop, and some are remade whenever their originals change with age. It stands on Spielbudenplatz in the heart of St. Pauli, an easy daytime stop to pair with the nearby Landungsbrücken.
