Precisely after Duomo and castle: sights behind, evening ahead โ enter from the castle, drift to the arch, cap with Torre Branca or ice cream under trees. Or make it your running morning if you run.
Within opening hours yes, lively until the gates โ after which it genuinely locks, mooting the question. As in any great park: the lit edges beat the dark middle late on.
The little park library among the trees โ a quiet gem with outdoor reading seats; the rare open days atop the Arch of Peace; and the bridge turtles, free delight for small children.

Sempione is Milan's green lung: forty-seven hectares of English-style lawns, ponds and tree walks running from the back of the Sforzesco Castle to the Arch of Peace โ one stately axis walked from red fortress to white arch. It is Milan's daily park above all: runners, family picnics, turtles by the little bridge โ with landmarks scattered so that idling becomes discovery: the steel Torre Branca viewpoint, the Triennale design palace, a little library among the trees, arches and bridges all made for photographs. For the visitor it is the perfect breathing space between the centre's density and its sights โ and sunset from its castle-facing bridge, or beneath the arch, closes a Milanese day as it should close.
