Parque Buenos Aires is a public city park in the upmarket Higienópolis district of central São Paulo, filling a whole block between Avenida Angélica and three streets, about two hectares in all. It opened as a square on 24 September 1913, was reclassified as a park in 1987, and is protected as heritage by both city and state. The park was proposed in the plan for remodelling the city presented in 1911 by the French urban planner Joseph-Antoine Bouvard, and its layout follows the principles of the English landscape garden, with winding paths, slopes used for viewing and informally arranged planting. Its highest point once had a lookout, later replaced by an astronomical observatory used by the engineering school from 1913 to 1964. Today it keeps elements of its original design and a set of public sculptures, a quiet green refuge among apartment blocks where residents come to walk and read, and a pleasant short break on a tour of the city centre.
