Vidigal beach is a small, quiet cove at the foot of the «Two Brothers» peaks, Dois Irmãos, between Leblon and São Conrado on the coast road that winds around the mountain, away from the crowds of Ipanema and Leblon. It takes its name from the Vidigal district above it, named after Major Miguel Nunes Vidigal, a 19th-century Rio police commander who was given land at the foot of the mountain by Benedictine monks in 1820. Many say the sea view from Vidigal is the finest in Rio; the spot was known for fishing, and a large hotel stands at one end of the beach. The district above began as an informal settlement in the 1940s and since 2012 has seen gradual improvements in safety and infrastructure, becoming a destination for hillside restaurants and cafés with sweeping views, and the start of the trail up Dois Irmãos. The beach suits a relatively calm swim and a break from the crowds, reached by bus or car along Avenida Niemeyer. Climb Dois Irmãos with a local guide from the district, and go by day.
