Chacrinha Park is a small nature reserve in the middle of Copacabana, one of Rio's most densely packed districts, with 13.3 hectares of forest among the apartment blocks beside the Ladeira do Leme. It was formed from the grounds of old military installations and from the «Chácara do Leme» estate, whose diminutive, «Chacrinha», gives the place its name. The park was created on paper in 1969 but only opened in practice in 1984. It is the neighbourhood's last refuge for animals such as opossums, armadillos, hawks, owls and the white and black anis, with Atlantic Forest trees such as embaúba, guatambu and paineira, and it helps temper the climate of the crowded district. Short trails wind among the trees to small lookouts over Copacabana's rooftops and the sea, making a quiet walk away from the beach's bustle, best in the morning when the birds are active. Entry is free; check opening times and go by day.
