The Casa de Rui Barbosa is a museum and cultural institution in Rio's Botafogo district, on Rua São Clemente. It grew out of the Rui Barbosa House Museum, created by decree in 1927 and opened on 13 August 1930 in one of the city's oldest urban estates, where the Brazilian jurist, politician, lawyer and thinker Rui Barbosa lived from 1895 to 1923. It is a house museum: a historic home shown with its original furniture and collections, keeping the spirit of its owners. In 1966 it became a foundation of the Ministry of Culture, the Casa de Rui Barbosa Foundation. Besides the museum collection and the house's original library, the foundation is one of Brazil's leading centres for preserving documents, with archives listed in UNESCO's Memory of the World register, including manuscripts and letters of major Brazilian writers.
