The Pasaje Dardo Rocha is one of the finest buildings in La Plata, capital of Buenos Aires province, a city founded in 1882 on a modern plan. It was originally the city's main railway station, the 19 de Noviembre station, officially opened on 30 August 1887, facing Plaza San Martín at the heart of the city. Its best-known feature is the long inner hall, about eighty-five metres, rising three storeys under a glass roof, with columns, arcades and a black-and-white chequered floor, used for exhibitions and fairs and as a set for films and commercials. Today it is a cultural centre housing MACLA, the Latin American contemporary art museum, the Municipal Art Museum, halls and a café. Entering the building is free; La Plata is about an hour from Buenos Aires, so pair it with the La Plata Museum and the Casa Curutchet on a day trip.
