The Paseo del Bosque is the largest green space in La Plata, capital of Buenos Aires province, spreading over some sixty hectares of woods and paths. It grew out of an old estate expropriated when the city was founded in 1882, and is planted with poplars, oaks, ombúes, willows and eucalyptus. At its heart is an artificial lake where boats and pedal boats are rented, with an artificial grotto at one end from which a small waterfall drops, and beside it the Martín Fierro open-air theatre, built in 1949 in Roman style with about 2,400 seats. The park also holds the famous La Plata Museum of natural sciences and the astronomical observatory, bringing nature and culture together in one outing. The park is free and open; boats and the museum charge separately. It lies about an hour from Buenos Aires.
