The Teatro Argentino in La Plata is one of the country's leading opera and ballet houses, with its own resident orchestra, chorus and ballet. Its first building, in Italian classical style, was among the finest theatres of the nineteenth century, until a great fire during a ballet rehearsal destroyed it in 1977. Almost two decades later the new building opened on 12 October 1999: a massive block of exposed concrete in modern brutalist style whose look sparked much debate in the city. Through the season it stages opera, ballet and concerts. Performances are ticketed, and building tours are held at times. La Plata is about an hour from Buenos Aires; pair a visit with the La Plata Museum and Casa Curutchet.
