A historic hotel on the Bund where it meets Nanjing Road, in two buildings. The north building was completed in 1929 as Sassoon House, home of the Cathay Hotel, built by the businessman Victor Sassoon; its 77 m tower made it one of the first tall buildings in the Far East. The south building went up in 1908 as the Palace Hotel and now holds artists' residences and studios. The north building is known for its green pyramid roof on the Bund skyline, for its Old Jazz Band, whose story became the subject of a film, and for its roof terrace restaurant looking across the river to Pudong; it is run today by Fairmont. The façade can be admired from the Bund at any time, and visitors may step into the lobby, while the restaurants and bar have their own prices and serve alcohol.
