A historic quarter at the north end of Shanghai's Bund, where Suzhou Creek meets the Huangpu River, holding the oldest group of buildings in the Bund area; its Chinese name, Waitanyuan, «source of the Bund», refers to its buildings being older than those of the famous waterfront. The British consulate began building here in 1848, and cultural institutions, among them the North China branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, later gathered around it in buildings of stone and red brick. Being revived in a large renewal project, they now hold shops, galleries and restaurants around the old consulate garden. The quarter's streets are free to wander at any time, and it makes a good starting point for a walk south along the Bund or beside Suzhou Creek.
