A nineteen-storey Art Deco building near the meeting of Suzhou Creek and the Huangpu at the north end of the Bund, completed in 1934 to designs by Palmer and Turner. On completion it was the tallest apartment building in Shanghai, and remained so for decades; it was the city's closest approach to a modern American skyscraper. Its brown-brick mass steps back in tiers as it rises, and for more than fifty years it was one of the main symbols of Shanghai. Renamed Shanghai Mansions in 1951, it later took back its original name, and today it is a hotel said to command one of the best views of the Bund and the Huangpu. The building can be seen free from Waibaidu Bridge and the Bund promenade, and it photographs best rising behind the steel bridge at sunset.
