The main sunset path is well-trodden and photographer-peopled โ keep to it, descend with the last light, no worry. Usual belongings-care in the crowd โ and the dark side paths are not for night.

Philopappos is the Hill of the Muses and Athens' great free balcony: a pine wood directly opposite the Acropolis giving its most famous photographic angles โ the Parthenon in full profile from equal height, the city and its sea behind to the Saronic. Its paved paths (Pikionis' celebrated stone-by-stone design) climb past the Roman funerary Philopappos Monument on the crest (116 AD), the rock-cut "Prison of Socrates" of legend, and the small Byzantine St. Demetrios church โ with its sisters: the Hill of the Nymphs and its observatory, and the Pnyx, where history's first popular assembly met: democracy's literal speaker's rock. Sunset is its greatest rite: the Parthenon burns gold then lights up โ carry water, and crowds here never learned the word.
