The Areopagus is a bare rock beneath the Acropolis gate that carried the heaviest of roles: here sat humanity's oldest court โ the council of Ares' Hill that judged blood cases and gave Aeschylus a play's name โ and on this rock the apostle Paul stood (51 AD) delivering his famous speech on the Unknown God to the Athenians: the text is bronze-mounted at the steps, the spot a worldwide Christian destination. Today it is the nearest people's sunset balcony: free and forever open, giving the Agora columned below and the city as a sea of white houses โ slipperiness its signature: marble polished by millions of sitters, the metal side stair kinder than the original rock-cut steps. Twenty minutes that fall inevitably between rock and Agora โ and its evening is a standing young-Athens gathering.
