The Piazzale is Florence's balcony: a raised terrace on the southern hill opening the whole city in a single view — the Arno and its bridges, the Ponte Vecchio, the Palazzo Vecchio tower, the Duomo's dome commanding the skyline, Tuscan hills for a frame. This is the "picture of Florence" you have seen a thousand times, from the spot itself. The square is nineteenth-century, built in Michelangelo's honour with a bronze David at its centre. Walk up from the Ponte Vecchio in twenty gentle minutes via the stepped Poggi ramps through gardens, or take the bus if you prefer. Sunset is its famous hour — the steps fill like an amphitheatre before a show, and the show delivers. But its near-empty sunrise is the finer secret.

Or bus 12/13 from the centre, or a taxi to the square itself. Walking down beats walking up either way.
Before 8am the square is near-empty with golden eastern light on the city. For sunset arrive an hour early to claim steps — or climb five minutes more to San Miniato's quieter terrace with a near-identical view.
The view is the doing — with carried gelato and a long sit on the steps. Continue to San Miniato above, descend through the Rose Garden (peaking May–June), and the hill circuit is complete.
