Polaria is Tromsø's modern face to the frozen ocean: a futuristic building (1998) shaped like sea-ice slabs pushed and stacked ashore — gathering under one roof Arctic fish tanks (salmon, catfish and others swimming in a glass tunnel visitors walk through), a live bearded-seal pool (visitors feed on watching its scheduled daily feeding), and a panoramic cinema screening films on Svalbard and the far Arctic. Its educational section explains, with rare honesty, the polar ice retreat crisis through data and decades-spanning comparative images — a rare balance between family entertainment and serious environmental awareness that doesn't hide climate concern. Its harbourfront site makes it a natural stop between the Polar Museum and the centre — Tromsø's frequent rain (a wet city despite its polar fame) makes it an ideal rainy-day family choice.
