Amundsen's bronze monument on Tromsø's harbour commemorates the last voyage of Norway's greatest polar explorer: Roald Amundsen — first human to reach the South Pole (1911) and first to sail the Northwest Passage — set out from this exact harbour in 1928 on a rescue mission for a stranded Italian pilot north of Svalbard, and never returned: his plane vanished over the Barents Sea, his body never found to this day. The statue stands facing the waters that swallowed his final journey — a deliberately symbolic gesture northward, where he disappeared — a small memorial plaque at the base summarising his extraordinary polar achievements before the mysterious end. The site falls naturally on the harbour promenade between the Polar Museum and Polaria, a brief contemplative stop (ten minutes) linking the museum visit to its true geographic setting on the very water itself.
