The Florentino Avidos Bridge is a steel bridge made in Germany that arrived at the port of Vitória in 1927, under the state governor Florentino Avidos whose name it bears, and it was the first link between Vitória Island and the mainland. Vitória, capital of Espírito Santo, stands mostly on an island, and until this bridge was built it could be reached only by boat. With its latticed metal frame over the bay, the bridge is a symbol of the old city, seen from the historic centre and the port waterfront, framing water and the green hills around Vitória Bay in a single view. Newer bridges followed, the best known the long «Third Bridge» linking Vitória with Vila Velha, but this remains the oldest and the most bound up with the city's history. Its name was originally written without an accent on the A, as in documents from the governor's lifetime, though the accented spelling is common today. See it on a walk through the historic centre or from the bay shore, best at sunset.
