Anchieta Palace is the seat of Espírito Santo's state executive, facing the Port of Vitória at the entrance to Cidade Alta, one of the city's oldest quarters. Jesuit priests led by Father Afonso Brás began building the complex that became the palace in 1551, and it has housed the state government since the 18th century, making it one of the oldest seats of government in Brazil. The palace opens to visitors on free guided visits in small groups. On weekdays the visit covers the ground floor, with its room of archaeological finds from the site and the courtyard; at weekends and on holidays it also takes in the reception rooms and the governor's former residence. It looks straight out over the port. It opens Tuesday to Friday 9:00-17:00 and weekends and holidays 9:00-16:00; entry is free, and groups of ten or more book ahead.
