Morning to evening in the warm season, in intermittent cycles with still pauses between — which is the fun for children: nobody knows when the next burst comes. In winter they mostly rest; park and playgrounds remain.
Shaded benches run its length, and the Place Masséna cafés sit right at its edge. For lunch, cross into the old town opposite — two minutes on foot.

The Promenade du Paillon is a green ribbon through the heart of Nice, from the national theatre nearly to the sea, laid over a covered river and opened in 2013. It instantly became the city's living room — and its most reliable success with children. Its star is the water mirror: a plaza where more than a hundred ground jets erupt in surprise bursts, children running among them for hours; when the jets rest, the plaza turns into a mirror reflecting the buildings. Around it are huge wooden play structures shaped like sea creatures, and a cooling water mist in summer. The park separates old Nice from new, so you cross it several times a day anyway — Place Masséna to the old lanes and back — and every crossing is a pause.
