River Wonders, formerly River Safari, is a river-themed zoo and aquarium in the Mandai reserve in northern Singapore. It covers 12 hectares between the Zoo and Night Safari, known for its freshwater exhibits and boat ride, and sources call it the first of its kind in Asia. The idea began in 2007, and construction was announced on 11 February 2009 with a budget of S$140 million, which rose to S$160 million with building costs. It was built inside the compound shared with the other two parks and was later renamed River Wonders. The exhibits follow famous rivers of the world, with huge Mekong fish such as the giant catfish and Amazon species in big blue tanks. Land animals live here too, including red pandas, jaguars, babirusa, crocodiles and peccaries, and giant pandas have been shown in a special pavilion. It is 300 m in a straight line from the Zoo and 1.1 km from Bird Paradise, and combined tickets are available. Much of it is shaded, so it suits hot days and children. One guide says cash is not accepted, so carry a card. Check the boat ride's times and price at the entrance, and do not count on seeing any particular animal.
