Le Royal Monceau is a historic hotel that opened in 1928 on Avenue Hoche off the Arc de Triomphe, and reopened in 2010 after a complete redesign signed by the French designer Philippe Starck. The result of that redesign is what separates it from the other Paris palaces. The interior is not classical: mirrors, deliberately mismatched furniture and rooms that read closer to the private house of an art collector than to a formal hotel. It also holds an art gallery and an art bookshop, an orientation that is stated rather than incidental. The hotel has a long-established Arab and Gulf following and is an address this market knows well. The pool and spa are among the largest in any Paris hotel, which matters in a city where hotel spa space is scarce. The location is a few minutes on foot from the Arc de Triomphe and the top of the Champs-Élysées, with the quiet Parc Monceau nearby — one of the prettiest Paris gardens and among the least crowded with tourists.
