The Museum der Moderne is a large institution with a permanent collection and two buildings, one on the Mönchsberg with a famous view, on a paid ticket. The Kunstverein is far smaller, holds no collection, runs a more experimental programme and is usually free. The two complement each other rather than substitute.
The official site publishes the programme and its dates, including the closures between shows. Check it before going — arriving during an installation means a closed door, and the gap between two exhibitions can run two weeks.

An art association founded in the nineteenth century, today running a contemporary art space in the Künstlerhaus on the right bank near the old town. The Kunstverein is a European institution with its own logic: a members' association rather than a state museum or a commercial gallery, showing contemporary artists without selling and without building a permanent collection. That gives it freedom in what it shows and makes its programme more experimental than the large museums'. Exhibitions change several times a year and take in Austrian and international artists at different stages of their careers, often with installation, conceptual or video work. Practical points: entry is normally free or a nominal ticket, which alone makes it worth a stop. It closes between exhibitions for installation — check the programme before going. The visit is short, under an hour, and the location is a short walk from the old town across the river.
