In a narrow lane of old Naples waits one of art's great shocks: the Veiled Christ of Giuseppe Sanmartino — the body of Christ laid beneath a transparent marble shroud revealing features and wounds through it, stone impersonating wet silk so completely that a single block seems impossible. Generation after generation stands before it stunned by the same question: how? The whole chapel is a marvel of density: the family shrine of Raimondo di Sangro, Prince of Sansevero — scientist, alchemist and inventor whose experiments unsettled his century — filled with veiled Virtues: Modesty under her total marble veil, Disillusion within a fisherman's net carved knot by knot from stone. And in the crypt, his pure strangeness: the two Anatomical Machines — human skeletons wrapped in complete arterial trees, the eighteenth century's riddle, their making still unresolved.
