The Neues Schloss houses state government ministries and is not a museum, so it is not open on ordinary days. Parts open occasionally on announced open days or special tours.
The Staatsgalerie is minutes away, the older Schillerplatz is right beside it, and the palace gardens stretch behind towards the river. The square is the natural starting point for any walk in Stuttgart.
Summer for the lawns and fountains, December for the Christmas market. Avoid December if you dislike crowds — the market draws very large numbers.

Schlossplatz is the largest square in Stuttgart and the heart of the city. At one side stands the Neues Schloss, a big eighteenth-century baroque palace now used by the regional government, and in front of it a wide open space with lawns, water basins, two fountains and the Jubilee Column in the middle. The square is free and always open, and it is where Stuttgart gathers: people sit on the grass in summer, and concerts and markets run through the year. In December the Christmas market spreads into it — one of the largest and oldest in Germany.
